A group of geneticists exposed the seeds of a dicot plant to various levels of radiation in order to induce random mutations. Many of the irradiated seeds failed to germinate at all. Some of the seeds, however, germinated in the lab and were carefully studied. The scientists discovered a mutation that prevents the formation of a hypocotyl or epicotyl hook during germination.

Based on this scenario, the mutant plant most likely:
A) germinated and grew like a normal plant.
B) had damage to the apical meristem as the seedling emerged from the soil.
C) had damage to the cotyledons as the seedling emerged from the soil.
D) had damage to the emerging root tip.
E) was not be able to photosynthesize.
