acetic acid, benzoic acid and succinic acid gave negative results in our experiment. only lactic acid became colorless.

Have a closer look at the structure of lactic acid compared to the others.

You'll notice that it has an alcohol group on the molecule AS WELL AS the acid groups.

KMnO4 reacts with primary alcohols.

There are a number of these types of acids (known as alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs) - glycollic is another one, as are a number of the fruit acids.
