Question is
y=x-2
y=4x+1

what i did was

y=x-2
y=4x+1
(x-2)=4x+1
x=4x+1
x-4x=-3
-3x=1

x=-3
y=-3-2


x=-3 y=-5

is that correct?

No, sorry it is not right. here is my work

x-2=4x+1
-x    -x
-2=3x+1
-1      -1

-3=3x

-1=x

y=-1-2

y= -3

The answer would actually be x=-1 and y=-3.
using substitution, you would do
x-2=4x+1
now add the two to the other side getting,
x=4x+3.
Now subtract the 4x to the other side
-3x=3.
Divide be -3
x=-1
now plug x into the first equation getting,
y=-1-2, so
y=-3.
Does that make sense?
