How do I show a balanced chemical equation of the production of 1, 2-Dichloroethane?  I know it is a reaction between iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) and chlorine (Cl2) and I know the catalyst is ethylene (C2H4).  the chemical formula for 1, 2-Dichloroethane is C2H4Cl2.
I read the info wrong, FeCl3 is definately the catalyst, thanks for your help.

i believe it would be FeCl3 + Cl2 + C2H4 -> C2H4Cl2 + FeCl3. its balanced as that because all of the smaller numbers all add to the same amount on both sides.

It has been a while but
C2H4 + Cl2 -->C2H4Cl2

I don't think that the FeCl3 participates in the reaction. it may act as a catalyst. if this is the case then convention is to write the FeCl3 above the arrow as such
.................. FeCl3
C2H4 + Cl2 ----------->C2H4Cl2

Note the dots before the FeCl3 are not written in the equation. I have used them here to place the FeCl3 above the arrow as blanks are removed by Yahoo answers
