3 CH3CH2OH(aq) + Cr2O7^2?(aq) + 8 H^+(aq) ? 3 CH3C(=O)H(aq) + 2 Cr^3+(aq) + 7 H2O(l)
The reaction goes from yellow to green.  This is the first stage of the oxidation of alcohol in the Breathalyzer test.

3CH3CHO(aq) + Cr2O7^2-(aq) + 8 H^+(aq) ? 3CH3C(=O)OH(aq) + 2 Cr^3+ + SO4^2-(aq) + 4H2O(l)
This is the second stage of the reaction.

It is often very difficult to stop this reaction with a strong oxidizing agent like Cr2O7^2-(aq) at the 1st stage of the reaction because the aldehyde, CH3CHO, acetaldehyde, is very easily oxidized.
