Sodium in a plastic bag reacts with sulfuric acid to produce hydrogen gas. The volume of the gas in the bag is 20L. The temperature and pressure are 45°C and 102KPa. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of sodium with the H2SO4.

First of all, use the law of ideal gases for the hydrogen gas that was produced.

PV = nRT

102 KPa * 20 L = n * 8.314 L*KPa*K^-1*mol^-1 * (273+45) K
n = 0.77 mol

The chemical equation of the reaction is

2Na + H2SO4  --->  Na2SO4 + H2

Since we have only 0.77 moles of H2 produced, the actual equation is

1.54 Na + 0.77 H2SO4 ---->  0.77 Na2SO4 + 0.77 H2
