2x-4y=26
[5x+2y=5]2

2x-4y=26
10x+4y=10

12x=36
x=3

2(3)-4y=26
6-4y=26
-4y=20
y=-5

(3,-5)

2x-4y=26
x-2y=13---------(1)
5x+2y=5--------(2)
(1) + (2)
6x=18
x=3
substitute x=3 into (1)
3-2y=13
-2y=10
y=-5

therefore, x=3,y=-5

Multiply the second equation by 2 and then add them together:

2x - 4y = 26
10x + 4y = 10

The sum is 12x = 36, so x = 3 ....

BUT DON'T FORGET ABOUT y!!!!  (I'm a math teacher, so this is a big issue because so many students blow it!)

If x = 3, then you can use any of the previous equations to figure out y:

5x + 2y = 5 ==> 5(3) + 2y = 5

==> 2y = -10 ==> y = -5

So the solution is x = 3, y = -5

2x-4y=26; 5x+2y=5

2x-4y=26
(5x+2y=5)2

2x-4y=26
10x+4y=10

12x=36
x=3

2(3)-4y=26
6-4y=26
-4y=20
y=-5

(3,-5)

Divide equation 1 by 2 to get x-2y=13, then x=2y+13.

So:  5(2y+13)+2y=5
12y+65=5
12y=-60
y=-5

So x=2(-5)+13
x=3

Answer is (3,-5).

2x - 4y = 26
10x + 4y = 10-----ADD

12x = 36
x = 3

15 + 2y = 5
2y = - 10
y = - 5

x = 3 , y = - 5
