When you have a system of equations and you are trying to solve for x and y, multiply one equation by a certain number to eliminate x or y in the other equation by adding the transformed equation and the second equation.

Example:

2x+y=8 and 4x+3y=12

Multiply the first equation by -2. This will make your equation -4x-2y=-16.

Add this new equation to the second equation. This will result in one equation with one variable. 0x+y=-4

Now you have your y value. Substitute -4 into either of the original equations for y. I have chosen the first one because it is simpler. 2x+(-4)=8

2x=12   x=6

Now you have found x and y. (x,y)=(6,-4)

Hope this helps
