the cochlea is a part of your ear. sound waves that are transduced by your ear drum and adjoining ear bones are transmitted into the fluid of the cochlea. hear, neurons called 'hairs' are able to detect certain frequencies of sound and relay the information to the brain where its processed into audible noise.

Sound waves, but it also helps with the sense of balance. The cochlea is filled with liquid, which flows around inside the cochlea when the head is in motion; this liquid is what signals balance to your brain.
