My understanding is that the products of chlorophyll metabolism do not leave the leaf and are lost anyway. Is that not the case?
So, the breakdown benefits other plants/animals, but not the plant itself? I don't see how this self-depriving trait could be expressed in so many species.

That is often when trees are going to shed their leaves.  It is better than just disposing of it by letting the leaves fall off.

Chlorophyll breakdown provides renewal of old biomolecules , through recycling of nutrients in the surrounding environment of a plant. After renewal, various biomolecules of chlorophyll can be used for better growth of plant. For eg. decaying leaf may give Mg2+ to surrounding plants.
