The ideology that defined life on the large plantations was based on the idea of white supremacy and the exploitation of enslaved Africans. The plantation system developed in the American South as British colonists arrived in what became known as Virginia and divided the land into large areas suitable for farming.

The plantation system was characterized by large-scale landholding, slave-based labor forces, hierarchical and race-based management systems, export orientation, high-value per capita output, and the application of scientific techniques of management to improve productivity. The plantation owners believed that they were superior to the enslaved Africans and that it was their right to own and control them. They used violence and intimidation to maintain their power and control over the enslaved Africans. The plantation owners also believed that slavery was necessary for the economic success of the South. They argued that slavery was a positive good that benefited both the enslaved Africans and the white plantation owners.

In summary, the ideology that defined life on the large plantations was based on white supremacy and the exploitation of enslaved Africans. The plantation owners believed that they were superior to the enslaved Africans and that slavery was necessary for the economic success of the South.
