Gregor Mendel was a priest and scientist and is basically credited with being the father of genetics.

He is the father of genetics.
He was a monk who used pea plants to do his experiments. He discovered things like dominant and recessive alleles as well as inheritance.

This was controversial because he was a religious man, but his discoveries suggested something other than god was deciding traits and appearances.

Gregor Mendel was a Monk that worked with pea plants in a series of experiments that later contributed to his theory of genetics which states that certain appearances are determined by genes which contain at least 2 parts called alleles these parts of genes can be usually classified by dominant and recessive and the dominant always masks the recessive if it is present.  If 2 recessive alleles are present then the organism will have characteristics of what the gene codes for.  To put it simply he is considered the father of modern genetics
