The hypertension is controlled with medication.  Would it be advisable to go on a low dose of steroids for a short period of time to control chronic inflammation in his bowels?  He has an appointment with the doctor coming up soon.  I just want all the information i can get before the appointment.

The elderly person COULD be put on a low dose of Prednisone, but ONLY if the doctor considers that to be the correct course of action.  Why don't you let the doctor decide this?

The doc will have to balance blood pressure effects with the beneficial effects.   Hopefully, a small dose will be sufficient to help the bowels without significantly affecting BP.   If the BP is monitored and prednisone dosage adjusted accordingly, there isn't much risk of causing a serious BP problem.   The prednisone can always be discontinued if the side effects outweigh the benefits.
