Addition across a double bond saturates the molecule.  So if you add something like H-X, you will get a monohaloalkane.  If you add the element, X-X, you will get a dihaloalkane.

And, the lovely little complication of adding H-X, is the possibility of anti-Markovnikov and Markovnikov addition.  Instructors love those complications for test questions.
