I thought it was CnHn*2+2.
this works for cyclooctane but not for butane.
I drew out stick form of butane. Im confused.

For Cn, the correct answer for H is 2n+2.

Butane (C4) there would 10 H, or C4H10

Octane (C8) there would be 18 H or C8H18.

Cyclooctane is C8H16 (because of the presence of the ring, there is a loss of 2H bonds), so it doesn't fit.

Pull out your stick figure for butane again and see if maybe you were calculating correctly

For straight chain or branched chain alkanes, the formula is Cn H(2n+2) [ number of H atoms is two more than twice the number of carbon atoms.

For cyclic alkanes the formula is CnH2n [number of hydrogen atoms is twice the number of carbon atoms].
