Since the 1970s the trend has been for the states to replace their disparate statutes defining various aspects of stealing with an omnibus statute proscribing theft in comprehensive terms. These newer statutes replace the narrow common-law concept of what constitutes a taking, carrying away, and trespass. Most retain the specific-intent requirement, but generally define it as the “intent to steal” rather than the intent to permanently deprive another of his or her property.
