Insurance companies provide benefits—such as the cost of prescription drugs—to those who take out insurance policies and then become ill. Suppose genetic tests that indicate people’s health risks become widely available. How do you think this will affect the insurance industry? Explain your thinking on this issue.

This can be answered in many different ways. Insurance companies, if they know about your genetics, will charge you a lot more if you genetic dispositions for certain diseases. This ruins the whole idea of solidarity in insurances. It would make health insurance unavailable for many people.

Keep in mind that under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), insurance companies can't drop you based on a genetic test; however, if you are diagnosed, then unfortunately, GINA cannot protect you.
