The answer is D. Independent assortment refers to traits that are inherited independently of one another, meaning that inheriting one trait does not mean you will also inherit another trait. During crossing over in prophase I of meiosis, homologous chromosomes link together and form a tetrad, and exchange DNA. If two genes are close together on a chromosome, it is likely that they will stay with each other during the crossing over process; this is called gene linkage. If two genes are not close together, it is likely they will independently assort.
