I know that the skies are generally clear and sun is usually very direct, but I don't know exactly.
And what is the average altitude range of deserts?

You have answered your own question.  Sunlight intensity in deserts is high because the skies are generally clear.

As for average altitude, it varies from desert to desert.  Some are at sea level, others are much higher (parts of the Himalayas are technically desert).  Altitude is not a defining feature of desert biomes.  Low precipitation is the defining feature of deserts.
