The isomerization reaction, CH3NC → CH3CN, is first order and the rate constant is equal to 0.46 s-1 at 600 K. What is the concentration of CH3NC after 0.20 minutes if the initial concentration is 0.10 M?
A) 4.0 × 10-4 M
B) 9.1 × 10-4 M
C) 4.0 × 10-2 M

The isomerization reaction, CH3NC → CH3CN, is first order and the rate constant is equal to 0.46 s-1 at 600 K. What is the concentration of CH3NC after 0.20 minutes if the initial concentration is 0.30 M?

formula is

k = (2.303 /t ) log[A0/A]

where A0 = intial concentration = 0.3 M

A = concentration after 0.2 minutes =

k = tate conctant = 0.46 s-1

t = time = 0.2 min = 0.2 x 60 = 12 sec

plug in these values in above equation

0.46 s-1 = (2.303 / 12 ) log[0.3M / A]

log[0.3M / A] = 0.46 x 12 / 2.303 = 2.4

0.3 /A = 102.4 = 249.4

A = 0.3 / 249.4

A = 0.0012 M
