SiO2 is not a discrete molecular compound, but a networked solid. The actual building unit in SiO2 - which you may know as quartz - is the (SiO4)4-, a tetrahedral dianion; all four oxygen atoms at the corners are shared between neighboring tetrahedrons, which accounts for the empirical formula SiO2. Obviously, such a structure will have a pretty high melting point, especially when you consider that the Si-O bond is very strong.
