I know this is a stupid question, but I'm confused about what exactly a phenotype is. Could someone give me an example of a change in genes that results in a new phenotype?
So if there were a change in genes, resulting in a new phenotype, would this new observable trait be new to all humans, or just that family?

Phenotype = The observable physical or biochemical characteristics of an organism - eg. eye color, skin color, bllod group etc.....

Normal gene - "normal".
Altered gene - albino.

If it's truely a "new" phenotype it would be new to the whole species.  Therefore it would also be new to the family.
