PLease help with giving me an explanation as to why these answers are correct:
1. Why does continental drift not have a direct effect on the amount of precipitation in an area?

2. In temperate lakes, the surface water is replenished with nutrients during turnovers that occur in the:
A. autumn and spring

(questions 3+4) When a female cat comes into heat, she urinates more frequently and in a large number of places. Male cats from the neighborhood congregate near urine deposits and fight with each other.

3. Which of the following is a proximate cause of this behavior of increased urination?
A. It is a result of hormonal changes associated with her reproductive style.

4. Which of the following would be an ultimate cause of the male cats' response to the female's urinating behavior?
A. Male cats respond to the odor because it is a means of locating females in heat.

5. A cage containing male mosquitoes has a small earphone placed on top, through which the sound of a female mosquito is played. All the males immediately fly to the earphone and thrust their abdomens through the fabric of the cage. Which of the following best describes the reason for this behavior?
A. Copulation is a fixed action pattern, and the female flight sound is a sign stimulus that initiates it.

- Why does continental drift not have a direct effect on the amount of precipitation in an area?

Precipitation and the seasons have to do with the earth's tilt and how far away from the equator the land mass is located or how high up or down (altitude) of the land. Regardless of where the land drifts, if it drifts into the northern hemisphere it will be cold and snowy.

2. In temperate lakes, the surface water is replenished with nutrients during turnovers that occur in the:
A. autumn and spring

During late summer and autumn, air temperatures cool the surface water causing its density to increase. The heavier water sinks, forcing the lighter, less dense water to the surface. This continues until the water temperature at all depths reaches approximately 4 Celcius. Because there is very little difference in density at this stage, the waters are easily mixed by the wind. The sinking action and mixing of the water by the wind results in the exchange of surface and bottom waters which is called "turnover."

3. Which of the following is a proximate cause of this behavior of increased urination?
A. It is a result of hormonal changes associated with her reproductive style.

Most animals (females) releases hormones into their urine to indicate whether they are in heat or not. The male species smell the urine to see if they are ready to copulate.

4. Which of the following would be an ultimate cause of the male cats' response to the female's urinating behavior?
A. Male cats respond to the odor because it is a means of locating females in heat.

Explained above

Mating in mosquitoes is an instinctive behavioral sequence that is indivisible and runs to completion. The sound they hear and the actions that result is an innate response (they don't think about it, they just do it).
