From a chemical standpoint, Bond making usually releases energy and bond breaking usually requires energy, so why does catabolism release energy if bond breaking is its defining feature?

Anabolism: Endergonic (energy-requiring) reactions whereby small molecules are built up into larger ones.

Catabolism: Exergonic (energy-releasing) reactions whereby large molecules are broken down into smaller ones, releasing energy.
