Carbon resistors commonly come in ratings of 1/8 W, 1/4 W, 1/2W, or 1 W, meaning that this is the maximum rate at which the resistor can dissipate energy at room temperature. If a 300 Ohms resistor has a rating of 1 W , what's the maximum current it should carry?

W = E * I
W = (I * R) * I
W = I^2 * R
R = 300 ohms
W = 1 W

1 = I^2 * 300
1/300 = I^2
0.00333 = I^2
I = 0.0577 amps = 57.7 ma

Power = I²R
1 watt = I²(300)
I² = 1/300 = 3.33e-3

Current = sqrt(Power/Resistance)
                      = sqrt(1/300)
                      = 0.0577 A
