lines of latitude run  east west and measure north south

Latitude runs east - west, longitude north - south.
1 minute on the latitude scale always equals 1 nautical mile (i.e. one degree = 60nm). The longitude scale is different depending on the latitude it is measured at. At the equator 1 minute longitude is 1nm, as you move north or south 1 min longitude decreases down to zero directly on the north or south pole.
Each line of longitude cuts the Earth directly in half and so is known as a great cirlce. The only line of latitude that is a great circle is the equator. Other lines of latitude are known as small circles.
Longitude runs from zero degrees (at the greenwich meridian) to 180 east or west (the international dateline). Latitude runs from zero deg. (at equator) to 90deg. north or south (north and south poles).
As you move to a different longitude the solar time of day changes (by 1hr for every 15deg.). As you move to a different latitude the time of day remains the same but the sunrise and sunset times change.
