In seismology, is there a correlation between the earthquake magnitude on the open ended Richter Scale and the ground acceleration at a particular point? In structural engineering we relate the forces on a building structure to the ground acceleration as a proportion of the acceleration due to gravity.

I would like to be able to compare a reported earthquake strength with the seismic forces used in designing buildings in the area of an earthquake.
