What is hypercapnia?

Hypoxia is the when there is insufficient O2 in the blood, while hypercapnia is when there is too much CO2.

How does it affect respiration?

An increase in CO2 results in carbonic acid formation; carbonic acid stimulates the medulla oblongata via chemoreceptors that detect the rise in acid. This, in turn, sends a message down to the diaphragm stimulating it to relax. This results in a decrease in thoracic cavity area, causing the lungs to decrease in size and exhale, releasing the CO2 that's built up in your blood.
