A projectile fired horizontally over level ground falls to the ground in 2 s. If it had been fired with twice the speed in the same horizontal direction, it would also have hit the ground in 2 s. Explain why.

yes, it would have .

The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/sec^2.

regardless of the initial forward speed, gravity acts on the projectiles at the same rate.

When a projectile is fired, its horizontal velocity does not change. However its  vertical velocity changes due to acceleration due to gravity. It's  y-axis component changes.Hence it will fall back to ground.(ucos0= v = constant).
