Researchers from Cedars-Sinai's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute found a vascular genesis gene could contribute to human marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) constantly ameliorating diabetes in animal models. The paper was published on PLoS ONE journal. This findingdemonstrated the possible benefit of hBMSCs for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes and gave new insight into the mechanism of β-cell recovery after injury mediated by hBMSC therapy. It was also a promising way for diabetes patients using own bone marrow to treat disease. However, few people know how stem cells affect insulin β-cell, namely insulin-producing cell, or how scientists promote β-cell update lasting and insulin producing. When researchers genetically modified stem cells to transiently express vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), mice pancreas can regenerate β-cellthus to continuously ameliorate pancreas. These kinds of stem cells facilitate corresponding vascular growth and assist to activate gene producing insulin. While the stem cells modified by pancreatic-duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX1) can temporarily generate β-cell. But it indeed plays an important role in β-cellgrowth and maintain. During this 6-week research, among the 9 mice with injection ofhBMSCs-VEGF, 5 were reversed hyperglycemia and came to normal GLU level, and the other 4 were improved survival and gained weight. Sustained reversion of diabetes mediated by hBMSCs-VEGF was secondary to endogenous β-cell regeneration and correlated with activation of the insulin/IGF receptor signaling pathway involved in maintaining β-cell mass and function.
