I'm aware that in terms of genetics, they are both needed but what would be used in our first step and why? What's its importance as far as genetics go?

Once fertilization takes place, mitosis begins. Mitosis is the mechanism that allows cells to replicate. Pretend you cut yourself. The undamaged cells surrounding the cut will begin to divide and replicate, leading to the formation of new viable cells. When a living thing needs to reproduce, it produces cells with half the genetic material - these cells are called sex cells. In humans, males produce sperm and females produce eggs, both of which have half the DNA via the process of meiosis. Both processes are equally important, but don't forget they serve and totally different purpose.
