Equality among the masses increased. Although there was a rising middle class, the distance between the "haves" and the "have-nots" became greater. Slavery flourished for the first hundred years of the Industrial Revolution. People who could afford them demanded more and more consumer goods while vast numbers of workers remained destitute and at the mercy of the capitalists.
