A square of a number is the number multiplied by itself. The square root of a number is what two numbers multiplied together equal that number.

If y = x * x then the square root of y is x.
Also, if y = x * x, then x squared is y.

The square of 2 is 4. The square root of 4 is 2.

Not all numbers have a square root, but every number has a square.

The square of a number is when you square a number or times the number by itself, e.g. 4 squared is 4 times 4, so therefore is 16.

The square root of a number is when you find out what number squared makes up another number, e.g. the square root of 4 is 2 because 2 times 2 is 4.

All numbers have square roots, but some numbers might not have a whole number root, like 4, 9 or 16.
