A rectangular corral of 160 square meters is to be fenced and the subdivided into four smaller rectangular pens by three parallel partitions, all parallel to two of the outer sides. Find the dimensions of the corral so that the total amount of fencing required is minimized.  Neutral Face

Hopefully I can enlighten you with my knowledge.

First, the corral is 160 = A.

Not sure if you know this, but any rectangle with a given area has a minimized perimeter when all its dimensions are the same (so a square). Square root 160 and you get:

12.64

This means that the side length of the corral will be 12.64 all around. Now since we divide the corral into for equal retangles, we divide 12.64 by 4 to get:

3.16.

This means that each small rectangle will be 12.64 by 3.16.
