I'm trying to understand the steps in forming an alum from aluminum, but I still don't understand. Why sulfuric acid? Why not hydrochloric acid or nitric acid?

I did this lab two weeks ago. Sulfuric acid is needed because alum contains the sulfate molecule, which is SO(4) with a charge of negative two.
