Damage to the articular cartilage of a synovial joint can contribute to the development of arthritis. With arthritis, the articular cartilage breaks down and the underlying bone is damaged. There are three common forms of arthritis that result in the same basic symptoms. However, each form results from a different mechanism by which the cartilage is damaged.
