The anterior horn of gray matter is concerned with somatic (skeletal muscle) motor functions. The posterior horn contains cell bodies of neurons that process both somatic and visceral incoming sensory information. Present only from the first thoracic vertebra to the lumbar portion of the spinal cord, the lateral horn contains cell bodies of neurons responsible for control of viscera via the autonomic nervous system.
