This has to do with the Latent Heat of the water.  It's the amount of energy required for a phase change to occur.  In this case, the phase change is from Liquid to a Solid.

Q=mL

Q=Amount of Joules [J]
m=mass (50 g)
L=Latent Heat of the substance (334 J/g for water)

So
Q=50g x 334 J/g
Q=16,700 Joules are given off
