I know the sperm has a high surface area/volume ratio and the egg has a low surface/volume ratio, but what does that have anything to with diffusion?

I do not believe that there is anything to do with diffusion here, but rather fertilization. The sperm must move quickly to the egg cell and is thus smaller (high surface area to volume ratio) and more mobile. The egg cell simply receives the sperm and does not require such rapid movement so it is larger (low surface area to volume ratio). The egg does not diffuse, it is fertilized.
