I don't care about wasted water or power usage, just interested in filtration etc. I've heard for example reverse osmosis filter membranes can foster the growth of bacteria etc.

as my opinion i think distillation process is better because of
this process related with heat. water must boil reach boiling point then can kill bacteria. but reverse osmosis the same as filtration process. only
there is special media for filtrate at high pressure condition.

With distillation you would have to have a power source to boil the water.

You can achieve essentially the same water quality with either technology, if you do not care about waste or power.  RO membranes can get fouled by bacteria or alga from the source water, that is why they must be periodically sanitized by chlorination or other biocide treatment.  But this is mainly because the growth plugs up the membrane, reducing the output.
