Since you didn't mention a specific system, then I'll say that buffers are used to regulate and maintain a system's normal conditions like pH and temperature. So it aids in homeostasis essentially and it contributes to the normal function of certain cellular processes that are run by proteins. And we all know that proteins can be easily affected by its environmental conditions.

Simply put, a buffer is a substance that minimizes changes in concentration. It works by trying to bring the pH level back to the neutral zone, or around 7.
