Morning sickness is accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting (that do not necessarily occur only in the morning). These symptoms are thought to be related to elevated hCG, estrogen, and progesterone levels, but no definitive cause has been identified. Some women suffer from an extreme form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum. This results in excessive vomiting leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and weight loss in the mother. Severe cases require hospitalization and administration of fluids intravenously.
