if copper(I) sulfide is partially roasted in air (reaction with O2) copper(I) sulfite is first formed. Subsequently, upon heating, the copper sulfite thermally decomposes to copper(I)  oxide and sulfur dioxide. Write balanced chemical equations for these two reactions

1.80 mol Cu react with sulfur to give copper sulfide but which one?

Cu + S = CuS or 2Cu + S = Cu2S (and there are others).

1.80 mol of Cu give 1.80 moles of CuS but only 0.9 moles of Cu2S.

Molar mass CuS = 63.5 + 32.1 = 95.6 g so 1.80 moles are 172 g = 0.172 kg.
Molar mass Cu2S = 63.5*2+32.1 = 159.1 so 0.9 moles are 143 g = 0.143 kg (3 sig figs in each case)

2Cu2S(s) + 3O2(g) = 2Cu2SO3(s)
Cu2SO3(s) = Cu2O(s) + SO2(g)
