i just learned it and it seems extremely susceptible to basic book-keeping mistakes..is this just because i just learned the method that it seems dumb, or is it actually very useful (and fast) way to solve?

no, in fact no one ever really uses it.

gauss elimination is used more often
matrix inversion is also used
both of those have some practical significance.
I really don't know why they are still teaching Cramer.

Oh and by the way, many calculators can actually give you the solution automatically.
so that's even more of a reason not to be teaching it.
