The community college movement was designed to develop a system of local colleges accessible to the average high school student. Originally called junior colleges, vocational preparation was often the emphasis of these schools. They also provided the same general education courses a student would take in the first two years of attending a four-year university. Community colleges are usually less expensive than four year schools, even state-funded schools. Their course offerings are also more accessible to nontraditional students. Whether or not the quality of the education received at the community college is equal to that received at a four year school may be debated.
