Welcome back,

DNA has an overall negative charge. When they are placed in a gel, an electric field is created across the gel. The negative DNA is attracted towards the positive electrode, and away from the negative electrode. The fragments are usually sorted by size; the smallest pieces usually move the furthest, while the longer, heavier pieces don't move far from the wells.
