I don't know if you were taught the acronym PEMDAS meaning
Parethesis
Exponents (logarithms)
Multiplication & Division
Additition & Subtraction
General methods is using any of these operations to find x
5x +  6= 11
to find x you need
1) addition and subtraction
2) Multiplication & division?(5-x)=10
1.) Exponent
2.) Parenthesis - Addition & subtraction
3^(x+2)=9
1.) Exponent (logarithm)
2.) Parenthesis - Addition & subtraction
And so on
