2 -- According to Engel, there are three phases of the grief process: acute, restitution, and long-term. It is during restitution where the surviving spouse might join a support group to help cope with the loss. The acute phase is initiated by shock and disbelief, manifested by denial. During the long-term phase, the individual begins to come to terms with the loss and renew activities. Resolution is associated with the acceptance of the loss but is not one of the phases in Engel’s grief process.
