3 -- The cold zone is considered the safe zone. It is the area in which a more in-depth triage of victims can occur. The hot zone is closest to the site of the disaster. Decontamination takes place in the hot zone. It would not provide the needed safety to perform in-depth triage activities. The warm zone is next to the hot zone. The warm zone also serves as a location for decontamination of victims. Personal protective equipment is needed. It is not a safe location for the in-depth triage.
