1 -- Type O blood is the universal donor. ABO antibodies develop in the serum of people whose RBCs lack the corresponding antigen; these antibodies are called anti-A and anti-B. The person with blood type B has A antibodies, the person with type A has B antibodies, the person with type O has both types of antibodies, and the person with AB has no antibodies; therefore, this patient is known as the universal recipient.
